Professional Movers vs. DIY

Added 8/21/13

When the time comes to relocate, you’ll be faced with some choices to make regarding exactly how the move will happen. The choices you make about your move will determine some important things, including how much you spend, how long it will take, and how stressful the experience will be.

Nowadays it’s common for people to feel that the do-it-yourself method is not only possible but preferable for just about any task. The Internet contains vast amounts of easily accessible –but not always accurate – information that can make you feel confident enough to tackle even the biggest project. Unfortunately, no amount of enthusiasm can take the place of actual experience and road-tested know-how. Nowhere is this more true than when you’re preparing to move, and many homeowners and renters have learned this the hard way. Here are some reasons why:

  • Moving is physically difficult. This is the most obvious drawback of tackling a move on your own. Having some extra friends on hand can certainly lighten the workload, but those who have not been trained in the proper methods of lifting and transporting heavy items are running the risk of pain, injury and exhaustion.

  • Moving is time-consuming. A DIY move, especially when not planned out properly, can end up taking much longer than expected, especially if you include the packing process. A professional move, on the other hand, can usually be handled within a day and be completed in a much more thorough manner.

  • Moving can damage your valuables. Many homeowners feel they’ll save money by moving on their own, but then end up losing money due to damage to valuables. The packing, handling and shipping of delicate items is an art best left to the pros.

Before you embark on any major moving project, consult a trustworthy local moving company to help answer your questions.
